Whisper of a Shadow project invites us into a contemporary vision of the musical world of Louis Moreau Gottschalk, 19th-century New Orleans Creole composer and pianist. Composed and arranged by Yohan Giaume, the music will offer an exploration of the imprint of his time, examining in new compositions Gottschalk’s Afro-Creole rhythms, along with the melodies of the Crescent City and his celebrations of life, love, and death.
For this project, Yohan Giaume will collaborate with the excellent New Orleans-based clarinetist Evan Christopher who brings to the project his personal vision and style anchored in the important traditions of New Orleans.
Whisper of a Shadow project is supported by the French American Jazz Exchange Program, a joint program of FACE Foundation and Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation, with generous funding from the Cultural Services of the French Embassy, Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, Florence Gould Foundation, The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, Institut Français, Ministère de la Culture et de la Communication and Société des Auteurs et Compositeurs de Musique (“SACEM”). It is also supported by the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation, Café Istanbul (New Orleans), as well as the Conseil Régional Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes from France.
